Being a computer user, at some point of time we all were introduced to the fear of losing our data. I know it sounds familiar because we all love our data. The data can be of many types but most importantly you would not like to know that your precious pictures have been deleted due to new operating system installation or hard drive has been damaged. In this article, I'll discuss the importance of cloud storage and different popular cloud storage that provide more free space.
Generations Of Cloud Storage
We have been trying to save our data one way or the other. Remember those days when we used to save our tiny files on Floppy disc. Floppy discs could take a couple of MBs data. Those days the files used to be mostly text files that does not take much space. Since humans have developed technology so much and started using more and more information day by day, they have also developed the media to save the information. We used to call this information as files because there were not many files but now we have extremely large files to save. Maybe that is why now we call it Data.
It is almost impossible to mention here all the formats of files but two types of files we love a lot, these are Music files and Picture files. Almost all humans enjoy music and love to capture the moments and save them. Floppy discs were useless for all of us because they can't even store a couple of HD images. After that Optical disc came into existence.
Optical disc drive
Optical disc drive could take files of several GBs. Optical disc drive solved the problem temporarily because keeping data saved and accessible for a longer period of time is the biggest challenge. Optical disc drives are still in use but they are made of plastic and can be broken easily. The scratches in Optical discs drives can make them partially/completely unreadable. Imagine if your Optical disc drive is not detected by the system and it has very important information. There is nothing much you can do to get your data. However, there are a couple of software available those can help you to get your data. But 100% data will not be recovered. Well, this is another topic and I will write about it some other day. Next generation storage device was Pen Drive.
Flash Drive / Pen Drive
These drives are in a very small size that anyone could easily keep in a pocket or wear it like a locket. These drives are very compact and sometimes we call it Pen Drive because it could be easily fitted in a pen. No one was able to figure out if it was a storage device or a pen. Off course, these drives have some good and bad properties.
These drives can store hundreds of GBs of data in a device which is smaller than your smallest finger. These drives have a longer life than Optical Discs.
One bad thing about Flash drives is that they are easy to loose because of their size. They are small and you can easily misplace them. Once you have lost them you have lost your data. Another solution of storing the data is External Hard drives.
External Hard Drives
External hard drives are one of the most reliable options for storing large amount data. These drives can store thousands of GBs and they are not very much expensive. But the speed of external hard drives is questionable. These drives have huge capacity so one can save huge files in it but it takes a lot of time. We needed some solution for speed. SSD (Solid State Drive) was invented.
SSD (Solid State Drive)
Solid State drives can store data with up to 6GB per second blazing fast speed. You can use them in desktop and laptops and they can make your computer faster than ever. Due to speed, they are famous and they are small in size too.
The biggest problem with SSD is that they are very expensive. I am using a 256 GB SSD in my laptop and it costed me approximately $150 a year ago. But the cost is down a little bit now.
All of these solutions of storing the data are offline. You have another way of storing the data which is online.
Online Data Storage
We all have been visiting to so many websites and they provide us with a lot of useful information. These websites are made of web pages and we all know every web page has a size. It requires some space to save them. These web web pages are saved on online servers and are accessible 24*7.
Just like websites, our personal data can be saved online too. Nowadays we have so many cloud storage services that provide upto 50GB free cloud storage. Here are couple of them.
DropBox is a service that you can use to store files online. When you start with DropBox they give you 2GB online storage free. In case you would like to give it a try you can click here and sign up with DropBox. I prefer using DropBox because I am a Linux user and DropBox provides the client for Linux Operating systems. In case you would like to install clients for Linux, you can click on this link.
Google drive is a service from Google Inc. I do not need to tell you about Google. They are well known for Google Search and Android but there is so much that Google does. Google Drive is one of Google Services. Google provides 15GB of free storage and in case you need more you can visit the website and check the current plan. Google can provide you storage service for up to 30TB. 1 TB is equal to 1024GB. A file size can not be more than 5TB but I have not seen any file of 5TB . I am not a big fan of Google drive because they do not provide any client for Linux Operating systems. However, you can use third-party clients. In case you would like to subscribe with Google Drive you can visit this page .
OneDrive is a cloud service provided by Microsoft, formerly known as Skydrive. Just like Google Microsoft also does not need any introduction. Microsoft used to provide 15GB of free space but recently they have reduced the storage. Now it is just 5GB. In case you would like to subscribe with OneDrive please click here.
Note – OneDrive does not have any Linux client.
Mega drive is another online storage service which provides free 50GB data. Mega Drive provides huge data storage service with Linux client. In case you would like to sign up please click on this link.
CloudUP is a service that provides storage of up to 200GB for free. You must be feeling very energized after reading this and yes you can appreciate CloudUP for providing 200GB but there is a limitation of 1000 files or items. File size should not be more than 200MB and the number of files should not be more than 1000.
In case you would like to subscribe with CloudUP, sign up here.
In my opinion, online storage is safer than anything else. You do not have to be worried about loosing the data and you can start taking benefit of free storage. I hope this article help you selecting your a reliable and faster storage for you. Please give us your opinion in the comment section below.
Thank you! Have a good one!
