Ubuntu 15.04 Vivid Vervet MATE Beta 1 released today with other flavors of Ubuntu like KDE, Xfce, LXDE and GNOME desktop environment. Although, as usual Ubuntu unity has not taken part in Beta release. And first time Ubuntu MATE is an official releaed.
MATE (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈmate]) is a desktop environment forked from the now-unmaintained code base of GNOME 2. It is named after the South American plant Yerba mate and tea made from the herb, mate. The use of a new name, instead of GNOME, avoids conflicts with GNOME 3 components.
Welcome Ubuntu MATE official Release for the first time. Now it'll be easier for the users to keep their software updated, as all of its components are now in Ubuntu repositories.
What changes have been made since the Ubuntu MATE 15.04 Alpha2 release?
Well, the big change is largely backend stuff as Ubuntu MATE has transitioned from our unofficial iso build servers to the official Canonical build infrastructure. From Ubuntu MATE 15.04 onward images are now built alongside the other members of the Ubuntu family.
It is also worth mentioning that the Xubuntu team have been ever so welcoming and great collaborators. Some new features in Ubuntu MATE have come directly from Xubuntu development efforts. As always, I can't thank Mike Gabriel and Vangelis Mouhtsis enough for their help working the MATE packages through Debian and fixing bugs. A large percentage of the Ubuntu MATE development is actually taking place in Debian.
